Project Instructions
-
Step 1
Cover table and gather supplies. Prewash pillow covers and leave wet. There are nine technique instructions included in the kit to choose from – we are showing Itajime Triangle technique here.
-
Step 2
Fold the fabric according to the instructions. To get the traditional shibori look, folding tightly is key. Dye will have a harder time getting into the folded fabric which creates the white space in shibori design.
-
Step 3
Prepare the dye bath according to kit instructions using very hot water (140°F or greater). Test dye color by dipping a paper towel into the dye bath. If color is too light, add more dye; if too dark, add more water.
-
Step 4
Immerse your pillow cover into the dye bath. Leave in dye bath anywhere from 3 to 20 minutes (longer time equals less white space). When desired color is achieved, remove pillow cover from dye bath – do not unbind fabric.
-
Step 5
Mix Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative according to bottle directions and add bound fabric to the bath. Stir for 20 minutes. Remove and rinse in cold water. Remove the bindings. Wash in cold water with mild detergent, rinse and dry.
