Leather Pieces

Craft leatherwork masterpieces using leather scraps and remnants from Hobby Lobby! Our selection of quality leather pieces includes full-grain leather, cowhide, suede, and more!

There are five types of leather, determined by how many layers of the original hide are preserved. Generally, the more layers preserved, the higher quality the leather. From highest to lowest quality, they are: full-grain, top-grain, genuine (also called premium), split, and bonded.

Beyond those five types, discover a variety of leather forms and styles. From vegetable tanned leather to suede leather, Hobby Lobby has you covered. Veg-tan leather is a great material for making belts, wallets, shoes, and other items that need to handle daily wear and tear.

Tooling leather is a type of veg-tanned leather that is designed to be thick and firm so that it can be stamped or carved with custom designs. Use it to make personalized journals, bags, or dog collars.

Suede leather is the opposite of tooling leather, soft and flexible. Its velvety feel and pliable nature make it a common choice for creating leather jackets and accessories. You can even use it to upholster your furniture!

Hobby Lobby’s leather comes in a variety of colors. Use black leather to make a stylish accessory, or make a statement by using blue leather. Brown and tan are also classic options.

Craft leather sheets and scraps are perfect for small projects, like earrings, handbags, or keychains. There are also pre-made leather bracelets you can stamp or dye.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is suede leather?

Yes, suede is a type of leather. It is made from the underside of animal hides, while other leathers are made from the outside. Faux suede is typically made from polyester microfiber or a combination of polyester and polyurethane.

What is bonded leather?

Bonded leather is made from leather scraps and fibers mixed with synthetic material and bound to a paper or fiber backing. It is generally considered to be something between real and faux leather.

What is genuine leather?

Genuine leather is made from the lower layers of animal hides. It is considered a lower grade of leather, as it is not as supple or well-aging as higher-grade leathers.

What is full grain leather?

Full grain leather is the highest-quality grade of leather. It is made from the full, unaltered top layer of an animal hide. It keeps its original grain, as well as any natural markings, like scars, brands, wrinkles, or even bug bites.

What is top grain leather?

Top grain leather is the second-highest grade of leather. It is made from the sanded and buffed top layer of an animal hide. This removes imperfections seen in full grain leather, but it also removes some natural protective qualities. This lowers top grain leather’s durability when compared to full grain.
