How to sew a button?

Push a threaded needle through the underside of the fabric and one hole of the button. Stitch in an X pattern for a four-hole button, or straight across for a two-hole button. Repeat the stitch several times, and then wrap the thread around the stitches under the button. Push the needle back through the fabric and tie off the thread.
